Slate&Shell start new series about professionals styles. On the first fire goes solid style of Lee Changho. Thanks to this short book you will know why Lee Changho is player of the most solid style. Author - Yuan Zhou - not only comment the games with two students (1d and 4k) but also approximate some facts from Lee Changho life.
Inside book you will find two Lee Changho games. First is very famous: against Rin Kaiho from Japan when Lee won his first international title. Second game is from 11th Fujitsu Cup when Lee Changho was playing against one of his best friend Chang Hao from China. Lee Changho won both games by showing his solid style.
I know that Lee Changho play very thick, but only when i read comment to second game I understand true power of this kind of style. Playing solid in go require deep reading skill and great concentration in yose (especially in byo-yomi). You can’t afford to make any mistake. If you think you pass this requirements you can play extra thick moves in opening and middle game even if you are behind.
This book is one of my fav in my little go library. I recommend this book to every go player stronger than 5kyu EGF it will change your way of looking on the direction. At end I want to show you two quote from the book:
Fujisawa Shuko,[...] once remarked that with any other player, he can go over their games once and understand everything that is going on. “But Lee Changho games” he said, “I have to go over twice”.
Expecting to make 100% move every time is obviously unreasonable. No one can be perfect. So Lee is not looking for perfection.[...] He simply aims to attain an average level [...] moves that is little better than that of his opponent.
