4th World Go Oza - Korea
After 3rd round of 4th World Go Oza Korea team was knocked, all 3 baduk masters from Korea lost to their Chinese opponent. In 4th game even greater miracle happen. Cho U from Japan beat Liu Xing from China by resignation. I’m not sure but I think this is historical event, when to semifinals of international tournament enter Japanese baduk master, but no one from Korea team!!!
In game between Cho U 9p and Liu Xing 7p, Cho U play the same opening which he used to defend his gosei title against Yamashita Keigo 9p. Of course Liu Xing done his homework and play white 10 to break Cho U plan.
Liu Xing is famous of his new ideas, so he didn’t miss the chance and play some interesting endgame tesuji like 112 and 136. Unfortunately he he feel too optimistic about ko fight in the middle and play questionable move - white 160. After white 172 situation looks very complex, but Cho U show great reading and change ko fight to his favour. After 207 moves Liu Xing resigned.
Of course game of the day was between Lee Sedol 9p and Xie He 7p. Xie He is one of very few professionals who has positive result against Lee Sedol 9p. Lee Sedol himself praise Xie He saying that Xie He is really great baduk master, his baduk is strong without weakness. Xie He play very solid baduk and IMHO this is why Lee Sedol have hard times playing against him.
The game started with the same opening from Lee Sedol 9p - Kono Rin 9p from 1 round, but this time Lee Sedol took white stones. The opening was interrupted by Xie He who decide to encloser white bottom left with 12. In game Lee Sedol tried to start many times complicated fight, but Xie He show great calm baduk and up to 79 Lee Sedol don’t get really chance to start complicated fight. After invasion there wasn’t chance to play peaceful. The fight was very hard, especially ko fight in bottom left corner was really entertaining. In the end Lee Sedol need to back and add stone to corner. Xie He won the game by 2,5 points after 292 moves.
In other two games Gu Li 9p beat Cho Hanseung 9p by 2,5 points after 260 moves, and Piao Wenyao 5p beat Mok Jinseok 9p by resignation after 199 moves. Cho Hanseung is always for me great unknown, he is able to beat anyone but his baduk IMHO is nothing special and he had some problems with his form in important matches. In other hand Mok Jinseok is also very strong but i feel that he will lost today. Piao Wenyao beat in previous round Lee Changho, and knowing that Mok is weaker than Lee I was 90% sure that Piao will win.
